Day 5 – Last Day in Cape Town and AfricaCom

Our last day in Cape Town. Attended second day of Africa Com and then spent the afternoon walking around the city centre and experimenting with digital camera. Dinner was taken at a South African cuisine restaurant called Mama Africa. Checked out of hotel and returned to Cape Town airport and flew out to Johannesburg with regional airline Kulula.

Day 4 – AfricaCom and Table Mountain

AfricaCom opened today at the Cape Town International Convention Center. I went and spent the first half of the day there. Around mid afternoon, walked up to Table Mountain and went up to the plateau summit. Hiked around and waited for sunset to take pictures.

Day 3 – To the Ends of Africa

On this day, we took a drive out to the Cape Peninsula to visit the famous Cape of Good Hope and Cape Point. In addition, we ended up seeing a few animals including the zebra, the eland, baboons, and ostrich. Next, we drove out to Boulder Beach in Simon’s Town and saw a penguin colony.

Day 2 – Walking Around Cape Town

The second day here in Cape Town turned out to be cloudy and rainy, so going up to the summit of Table Mountain was useless. Instead, we spent the day walking around the city centre of Capetown and seeing some of the old buildings and gardens. The evening found us at a South African restaurant called Karibu where I tried the ostrich fillet.

Day 1 in South Africa — Arrival, Cape Town, and Robben Island

We landed in Cape Town after a 12 hour flight from London. On the way to the hotel, saw quite a number of shanty towns crowded along the freeway. After checking in, we went out to Robben Island, the infamous island that was used to lock up political prisoners, lepers, and criminals since the 17th century.

The Night Before…

The night before our trip is to start. The bags are packed with gear and clothing. Lots of pens and pencils are also packed to hand out to local South Africans in the poor communities where they don’t always have the money to go out and purchase these items.

A Good Week Before South Africa Vacation

What a great week before leaving for my South Africa trip. Ran the Warrior Dash adventure race this past weekend and the San Francisco Giants just won the World Series today.

Countdown to the Rainbow Nation Vacation — South Africa

This is my first blog for the Travel page. I am closing in on my trip to South Africa for three weeks in November. I’ll be traversing pretty much the entire country from Cape Town to Kruger National Park and Durban to the desert. As always, I’ll be carrying my trusty Rough Guide to South Africa guide book and be looking up fellow hosts on Couchsurfers to meet and learn from about their rich and amazing country.

I've always felt that a life full of experiences is far more valuable than a life full of material goods. I have yet to come out of one of these experiences poorer than when I first went into it.
